A cool trick to change the "friend is now online" notification sound of Steam.

You can replace it by any sound file of your choice!

Open Windows file explorer — Open the file explorer of Windows.

facebook — Open the file explorer of Windows.

Go to this folder

Go to this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\friends\

(Or your steam installation folder, then 📁 friends)

Rename the current file
friend_online.wav

Into
friend_online_orig.wav

Doing this allows you to keep the original sound file, in case you want to put it back on later.

(i) — Get the sound file you want from your computer (to copy/paste it) or find one on google by searching

The sound file must be a
WAV
file. You could use any type of file (mp3, ogg...) as long as you convert it into a wav file. To convert sound files you can use AIMP, Audacity...

Put your sound file in the folder

Copy-Paste or save your sound file into the folder we opened before.

Rename the new sound file

Rename the new sound file into

friend_online.wav

Restart Steam

(i) — That's it!

Now you will have your own sound each time a friend comes online on Steam.

If you want to put back the original sound, just delete your sound and rename
friend_online_orig
into
friend_online
