To easily make a widescreen wallpaper from a movie poster, you need 2 things:
gimp ▼
movie poster ▼

Open movie poster in GIMP
Click: Image > Canvas Size
Increase image width
Slightly increase height
Click "Center"
Duplicate layer
Scale layer
Enter new width
Darken background
Drag brightness cursor to left
If you try to directly set a movie poster (usually a "portrait" image) as your desktop background picture, you will get an ugly centered movie poster with big black borders around it because you try to put a 'portrait' image into a 'landscape' screen...
But if you follow instructions of my tutorial you can make a cool wallpaper from your favorite movie poster, without any blank space
Let's do this!

Canvas Size...

Canvas sizesection, click the
▲
up arrow button until you have the image width like 3 movie posters wide.

Center
to automatically center the poster in the new canvas dimensions.2. Click
Resize
to finish.

Duplicate Layer.
This duplicated layer will be used to cover the entire background of the wallpaper.

Layerthen
Scale Layer...

Width, enter the wallpaper width so the layer will cover all the background of the wallpaper.
You can see the dimensions of your image in the title bar of the Gimp window

Colorsthen
Brightness-Contrast...

Then click
OK
Now you can save your image somewhere on your computer by clicking
Filethen
Export As...then enter a name with ".jpg" at the end to save it as a JPEG image (best image format for wallpapers).
To set your new beautiful wallpaper as your desktop background, find it on your hard drive and right click it then "set as wallpaper"!
